Publisher Description

This collection contains five Christmas radio classics from The Great Gildersleeve:

"McGee's Christmas Gifts" (December 21, 1941)

"Gildy's Christmas Woes" (December 20, 1942)

"Christmas Show" (December 19, 1951)

"Lost Presents" (December 26, 1951)

"Gildy and Hooker Feud at Christmas" (December 16, 1953)

The Great Gildersleeve was a popular radio spin-off, the eponymous character having first been introduced on the Fibber McGee and Molly show. Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, with his booming voice, is comically vain and pompous, but also a dedicated family man with vulnerabilities that endeared him to radio audiences. Unlike many of its predecessors, The Great Gildersleeve is a true situation comedy, rather than a series of gags or brief sketches.

You're a Clever Boy, LeRoy!

There is no better way to introduce yourself to one of radio's truly great programs. Harold Peary created a true original in loveable blowhard Throckmorton P. (for, believe it or not, "Philharmonic") Gildersleeve. This collection features both Peary and his successor in the role, Willard Waterman. The humor flows naturally from the situations and the characters are fully rounded. It is truly a picture of where America was during the war years in terms both of the sense of purpose that most Americans had at that time and the sacrifices that they were willing to make. One of the principal writers for this series was John Whedon, whose grandson, Joss, has made a bit of a name for himself as the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly".

The Great Gildersleeve Christmas

The Great Gildersleeve is by far one of the best OTR shows to collect. This series can really take you back to the 40's and 50's. The shows are very detailed for both sound effects and music and the story lines are very funny. If you do not collect OTR shows, this is a great place to start, you will become addicted.
