"Fans of the series will enjoy exploring secondary characters' lives and the truly heroic compromises Tom makes to be with the woman he loves." (Library Journal)
He needed peace....
Solicitor Tom Finchley has spent his life using his devious intellect to solve the problems of others. As for his own problems, they're nothing that a bit of calculated vengeance can't remedy. But that's all over now. He's finally ready to put the past behind him and settle down to a quiet, uncomplicated life. If only he could find an equally uncomplicated woman.
She wanted adventure....
Former lady's companion Jenny Holloway has just been given a modest independence. Now, all she wants is a bit of adventure. A chance to see the world and experience life far outside the restrictive limits of Victorian England. If she can discover the fate of the missing Earl of Castleton while she's at it, so much the better.
From the gaslit streets of London to the lush tea gardens of colonial India, Jenny and Tom embark on an epic quest - and an equally epic romance. But even at the farthest edges of the British Empire, the past has a way of catching up with you....

Another Hit
Mimi Matthews keeps knocking them out of the park as far as I’m concerned. I generally prefer a character driven plot and this book is a particularly well done example of one. Neither protagonist can budge from her/his position and remain true to herself/himself. Until their selves grow and change, that is. I dislike (intensely dislike) idealistic, naive heroines who assert their independence by doing stupid things like pulling over for hitchhikers because their faith in human nature is so strong. Well, Jenny’s faith in human nature runs about like mine, plus any time she gets an urge to do something really unwise Tom steps in and my realist girl Jenny allows him to do so. Props to her. There is a good setup for the next book. This book didn’t answer every question though- I’d actually like novellas (or novels) about the servants and the earl. I feel like there could be a romance between Mira (or Meera? Sorry, casualty of audio) and her cousin. I know cousins often married in this time period but maybe it wouldn’t fly with a modern audience. And I’d really like to see the earl grow up and find someone who will love a man suffering from depression. I suffered from four years of clinical depression myself so Giles’ story is something I care about. Check out Mimi Matthews books.
