Publisher Description

The first of the Sherlock Holmes stories, this was also the first of Conan Doyle's books to be published. In this fascinating and exciting tale, the two towering creations of detective fiction--Holmes, the master of the science of detection, and Watson, his faithful companion--make their auspicious debut. The two detectives are immediately in fine form as Holmes plucks the solution to the mystery from the heart of Victorian London.

The book itself stops at that point and goes on to the mormon section to give back ground information on the "villian." This was so controversial at the time, Doyle had to voyage out to the early mormon communities in order to apollogize. But this is exactly as the original was written, and as a matter of fact the other three novels also droll on with background information to the development of the villian.

The fifty six short stories are probably how Sherlock Holmes became the most sensational. The Hound of the Baskervilles was the best novel ever produced. I promise though for this story that you will miss nothing important by skipping the mormon segment and diving straight into the summation. The background story for the villian is too detailed and anti-climactic. But rest assured, that deviation is as it appears in the original text.

Riveting!

I bought the hard copy version of these stories, but found I didn't have time to read them during the week. Naturally, I went and bought this and it was worth it! Well read, and clear! I listened to it while I worked in my factory and it made the tint fly by!

the narration is not too bad, but a big suprise 1/2 way thru.. the story abruptly stops and the next 3-4 segments are a mormon religious story. definitely not sherlock holmes. how could a responsible publisher insert religious propaganda in the middle of a english novel? either not very bright or intentional farce. either way i would not recommend this book or this publisher...
