Publisher Description

AFTER MORE THAN TWO YEARS ON THE BESTSELLER LISTS, KHALED HOSSEINI RETURNS WITH A BEAUTIFUL, RIVETING, AND HAUNTING NOVEL OF ENORMOUS CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan's last thirty years -- from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding -- that puts the violence, fear, hope and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives -- the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness -- are inextricable from the history playing out around them.

Propelled by the same storytelling instinct that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once a remarkable chronicle of three decades of Afghan history and a deeply moving account of family and friendship. It is a striking, heartwrenching novel of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love -- a stunning accomplishment.

Wow

This was one heckuva story. Beautifully told and achingly vivid. I was much more deeply engrossed in this book than I was with Kite Runner. There are many similar themes and situations in this book as in Kite Runner. This book (audiobook) comes with the highest recommendations by me. As for the Audiobook (which is the version I had) I enjoyed it very much. The reader was smooth and easy to listen to with very subtle voice-changes to indicate character but it was very carefully done so as not to distract. It was also nice to have it read by someone who was obviously fluent in the languages and pronunciation of the setting.

Unspeakably powerful!

This book reminds me of my ignorance concerning world affairs and human suffering outside American borders. I recommend this book to all women of all ages who can find an appreciation for the suffering, sacrifices and simple pleasures of 'women-hood' found in this book.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The compassion with which the writer conveys this powerful story is impressive. I was at once touched and disturbed reading this work; a masterpiece as far as I am concerned.
