Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time, returns in a courtroom drama that The New York Times says is "riveting" and "suspenseful."
Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.
In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many readers know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and—most of all—heart.
Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.
There is a time to kill and a time for justice. Now comes A Time for Mercy.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Finally, John Grisham fans can stop holding their breath—Jake Brigance is back! The star defense lawyer from Grisham’s massive 1989 hit, A Time to Kill, and 2013’s Sycamore Row returns for his third gripping legal thriller. In Clanton, Mississippi, in 1990, 16-year-old Drew Gamble has been arrested and charged with shooting a sheriff’s deputy. No one is disputing the facts—he did it—but Jake soon learns why the shooting took place, and discovers that saving Drew from the gas chamber could mean putting his own life on the line. Grisham remains a master of suspense both in the courtroom and out. Actor Michael Beck’s lively narration whisked us effortlessly into Grisham’s signature vision of small-town Southern life, with all of its charms, quirks, and deeply held prejudices. A Time for Mercy is John Grisham at his best: a twisty and irresistible legal thriller that makes us reexamine some of our own beliefs.

A time for mercy
I thoroughly enjoyed the story throughout the book, however the ending left me hanging with many unresolved issues.
Engaging but Bad Ending
The whole book kept me really interested and had great pinnacle points. But at the end there were so many loose ends on 3 different things going on it was ridiculous, I’m tired of Jake Brigance and glad I’ve finished this series of books- won’t be reading twice.
Great book
Keeps you involved. You know there is going to be a surprise ending but are never sure how Grisham is going to bring everything together.
