Before
The Perfect Storm, before
In the Heart of the Sea, Steven Callahan's
Adrift chronicled one of the most astounding voyages of the century and one of the great sea adventures of all time. In some ways the model for the new wave of adventure books,
Adrift is now an undeniable seafaring classic, a riveting firsthand account by the only man known to have survived for more than a month alone at sea, fighting for his life in an inflatable raft after his small sloop capsized only six days from port.

Racked by hunger, buffeted by storms, scorched by the tropical sun, Callahan drifted for 1,800 miles, fighting off sharks with a makeshift spear and watching as nine ships passed him by. "A real human drama that delves deeply into man's survival instincts (Library Journal), Adrift is a story of anguish and horror, of undying heroism, hope, and survival, and a must-read for any adventure lover.

FANTASTIC! plus a BONUS interview!!

Exceptionally well written. For anyone who loves survival stories, this is an absolute must-have. Callahan is an engaging and thoughtful author and without doubt, the most resourceful, determined survivor I've ever heard of (it gets VERY hairy for him toward the end of his journey).
I very much like that he reads the story himself, for although he does not deliver the lines as dramatically as a professional narrator perhaps might, it does give the recording a moving authenticity (similar to Krakauer's Into Thin Air).
That said, I sincerely wish the producers had directed Callahan to slow down a bit as some of the true beauty of his prose is lost in his pressured speech. (for those listening to it- he starts off like a house on fire, then slows a bit as the story unfolds).
And BONUS- There is a great little interview with him at the end!
All in all, an excellent purchase.

Adrift:76 days lost at sea

Have read (listened) to other books about people being lost at sea, and this is as good as any. While others seem to have better luck with fishing, Steven Callahan has worse luck at just about everything. Well worth reading.

Disappointed

The sound quality is very poor with echoes as if read in the bathroom and at time very rapid. He should've had it done professionally. Story is compelling and I respect his ordeal but the telling of it needs help. I really wanted to like this. Not worth the money. Watch it on I shouldn't be alive on tv.
