Publisher Description

For years, ex–Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore has worked across the Middle East and behind the scenes for the Special Activities Division of the CIA, making connections, extracting valuable intelligence, and facing off against America’s enemies at every turn. And then...news of a potentially devastating coalition: What if two of the greatest threats to the security of the United States were to form an unholy alliance? The Taliban is trying to exploit a Mexican drug cartel to which they supply opium as a means to bring the fire of jihad to the hearts of the infidels. It is up to Moore, and his team, to infiltrate and dismantle the drug cartel, even as they hunt for those who would bring the ultimate terror and destruction to the streets of America. In a story that races from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U.S.–Mexico border, Tom Clancy once again delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality.

New Characters. New Verse? Or expansion?

There's mystery within the mystery. The last few books were about a new generation based around Ryan's son and his organization. Aside from a paragraph or two, there's no reference to that new world and nothing at all tying back to the original Ryanverse. It could be a one off or an expansion of the Ryan Jr. world, with those characters united in books to come. That would be my guess. But that's just book craft, what about the story?

Very fast and very gloomy. I would say this book is more of an education of what is really happening in the "neighborhood" than a fictional action story. There's a lot more detail and insight here than you'd ever get on the news. I just don't know if that is good or not. It's not a pleasant story. However it is fast-paced and action-packed. Like the best of the Clancy books, there are multiple treads of action zipping along in parallel and you have to remember the names and the individual stories, or you'll get lost fast. I wouldn't put it in the top three Clancy novels ever, I think time is compressed too much and the lead character is everywhere despite that taking a lot of time and extracting a lot of energy, which he didn't seem miss. There were incidents that seemed incomplete (one with the Indians and one with the English, for example) that I wanted filled in and completed. On the positive side, this is the opposite of "Red Rabbit." The complaint I heard there was "everything went right." Well, if that was your complaint there, you'll love this book. Almost everything goes wrong here. Overall, I was enthralled and it was difficult to put down. I lost some sleep, learned some things, and was entertained. At about the price of a movie ticket, Coke, and a popcorn, this packed in a lot more interest and entertainment. I recommend it, but read the two books about the son first, so you'll know where I think this is going.

Like all other Clancy novels, the story continues.

Great Book

A good ole' rock n' roll novel. Realistic, graphic, well written, and unexpected betrayals galore.
