One thing we love about Louise Penny’s mystery series about Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is its frequent setting of quaint small-town Quebec. But this time, the brilliant and empathetic detective is heading home to Paris. What was supposed to be a cozy family trip to visit his beloved godfather suddenly turns horrific when the 93-year-old billionaire is purposefully run down and left in a coma—and that’s before a body is found in the old man’s luxurious apartment. With the help of his archivist wife Reine-Marie’s formidable research skills, Gamache races against corrupt forces among the Paris police to probe into the source of his godfather’s wealth—and uncovers a larger and much older crime. Robert Bathurst’s deep, expressive narration perfectly establishes Gamache in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of his native City of Lights, especially in flashbacks to his youth. I’ve found my people
This is my favorite Louise Penny book, and Louise Penny has become one of my favorite mystery writers … or any writer for that matter.
The first of her books to take place outside Three Pines or Quebec more generally it brings together the entire Gamache family and provides a fairly detailed history of Armand and those who raised him. While the story stretches our credulity a bit (okay, a lot) it works because it allows the relationships of the family to play out in a way that a more sedate story line wouldn’t have. Enjoy

This is riveting right to the end. I really enjoyed the change of venue, ( Paris) and a whole host of new characters. It added a lot of freshness and engagement to the plot, and some great twists and upheavals!
