Although Lauren’s experiences as a transgender woman inform the story, this is first and foremost a deeply satisfying crime investigation filled with convincing police work, memorable supporting characters, and twists that continually reshape the case. Fans of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels and other character-driven procedurals will appreciate this thoughtful, compelling series opener.
