Publisher Description

This is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller set in America at the beginning of a socioeconomic collapse. Although an innocent casualty of the chaos, one young man must discover his inner strength and defiant courage as he comes of age learning how to survive in the wasteland of failing services, unemployment, and violence.

With the economy in free fall, the government crippled by indecision, the streets taken over by new political parties, and the fragile institutions of civilization crumbling, a young man finds himself homeless and alone on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., facing certain death unless he can master survival skills he never imagined needing. Fending off violent citizens in an urban landscape that is gradually sliding into looting and mayhem, the protagonist emerges as an ultimate force of justice in a lawless land.

This compelling, fast-paced novel pulls readers in and lets them experience first-hand what life in the United States will be like as its teetering society begins to fall.

As a writer myself I am frequently skepical of many other writers. They say don't judge a book by its cover and ironically us writers are more guilty of that than anyone. My first concern with this story was that it would hold a political agenda. Though it DOES work off of what some doomsayers predicted to be on our near horizon, American Apocalypse manages to avoid the political rhetoric and instead creates a possible universe that is as realistic as it is tantalizing. The main character initially comes off as niave but as the story continues the reader grows along with them. Other reviews have accused the author of failing to develop the characters fully. I disagree. The narrator comes off cocky and brings out the story's lack of literary poetry. But that seems to be exactly what the author intended. The writing itself is uncomplicated and does not attempt to be artistic. It is much more conversational. Which, when writing from a first persons character; is desirable. The story is told through the eyes of the main character who as I said is at first naive. And the story would not have worked had Nova attempted to give him Winston Churchill's grammer. In the post apocolyptic genre, this is the story that has been missing. There were times I would have preferred the story had gone in a different direction but thats just it! If you are entranced enough by the story and dislike an outcome, the author has succeeded by gaining an emotional response from the reader. I am purchasing the next book, which is the only audiobook besides the first though there are more books to the series. Hopefuly, if the second is as good as the first there will be more audiobooks. I recommend this book.
