Would LOVE to buy this audiobook, but $30.00???? Give me a break!
Hard to listen to (or read), but very good.
Bret Easton Ellis' book about a Wall Street yuppie in the materialistic Eighties and his descent into becoming a decadent serial killer took me a little patience to read, but I found later that was the point. Main character Patrick Bateman endlessly lists fine details about his posessions ad nauseum like you would expect someone who depended on a lifestyle of image would, ENDLESSLY describing his suits, facial creams, stereo, television, business cards...yadda yadda yadda, along with his life as partner at a high-powered Wall Street firm. This suddenly becomes interrupted when Patrick's lust for decadence, depravity and blood begins to overwhelm him...and intersperses with his normal life. The tone and graphic quality goes from shocking to sickening before reaching a shocking crescendo, and a suprise ending.
Weirdly enough, this book is filled with a strange humor! Two that come to mind is a chance encounter with Tom Cruise in the elevator to his high-rise (Bateman LOVES the movie Cocktail, and found out by suprise that Tom lives in the same building), along with a whole CHAPTER about how much Pat loves (wait for it)...Huey Lewis and The News. If you buy this, keep in mind the first few chapters drone, but are necessary to set the pace and tone of the novel. Prepare to be shocked (Bateman kills a child-be warned), but much like a rollercoaster, becomes REALLY interesting once the story picks up speed.
The closest thing I could compare this to would be the writings of the Marquis de Sade, and his tales of physical torture and sex, if mixed with the Me Generation. This book is really boring at first, funny and shocking later, and suprising at the end. A really good read, if you have the patience.
