Publisher Description
Amygdala is a story of animals, born to a world of swirling, fractal chaos, who learned the art of civilization. Their government was forged in fire, ruled only by the objective truth of all things, with no room for incompetence, mercy, or even morality. Their city, 'The Underbirth', holds within it the greatest collection of animal minds, born of mechanical systems designed to test everything: natural, cultural, industrial selection. Their art is beguiling, their science boundless, their bodies strong and lean and perfect.
And yet, amidst the beauty of a culture ruled by absolute competence, some begin to ask: what is the cost of civilization? When do animals stop being animals? Is there another way?
Customer Reviews
Phenominal and unapologetically gripping
Sam Fennah may be a new author, but he is no slouch when it comes to storytelling. His masterfully crafted world and characters suck you in and sink their claws in, making you feel as though you are a part of their world. And with the audiobook’s cast and excellently made musical score, narrated by Fennah himself, that feeling is only heightened.
The squeamish may want to avoid this one however, as it contains rather graphic scenes of violence and depravity. But unlike many modern works, every drop of shed blood is used to further the story in some way, rather than for cheap and simple shock value. There is also a lot of political drama in this book, albeit alien politics. But anyone who isn’t comfortable with such things would be better off avoiding this one.
But for those who can stomach the blood and the scheming, Amygdala is a glorious introduction to the world and culture of the Kivouackians. Sam Fennah is a promising new author, and this book is only the first in an upcoming series. Let us hope that he can keep up such high quality writing for the rest of the books.
