NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM ALEX GARLAND, STARRING NATALIE PORTMAN AND OSCAR ISAAC

The Southern Reach Trilogy begins with Annihilation, the Nebula Award–winning novel that “reads as if Verne or Wellsian adventurers exploring a mysterious island had warped through into a Kafkaesque nightmare world” (Kim Stanley Robinson). This 10th Anniversary Edition features a new introduction by New York Times bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler.

If J. J. Abrams, Margaret Atwood, and Alan Weisman collaborated on a novel … it might be this awesome.

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

This is the twelfth expedition.

Their group is made up of four women: an anthropologist, a surveyor, a psychologist—the de facto leader—and a biologist, who is our narrator. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.

They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life-forms that surpass understanding—but it's the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.

A feast for the ears

This book is a decadent, vivid, engaging world that blooms at the hand of an unreliable literary narrator. Truly an aural cinema, at six hours long, it is easy to become engrossed in this story. The pacing is good, and the Carolyn McCormick instills a tone of unease and thrill into the text.

It’s good but nothing happens

This book was good! The pacing of the story was odd. Maybe on purpose to mimic the rush and confusion the characters felt. To me, the biologist was very frustrating. She was very calm finding out big things. Like a clone of her husband walking around. Personally, I’d need to sit with that for a moment. She doesn’t seem to be fazed by things. Which is a fine character trait, but with her being our narrator, we don’t get many answers. I’ll probably read the next two to find out some answers because the story is so interesting and I want to know more about Area X. I would rate it higher if there was just a little bit more action, I guess? I mean, for as interesting as it was, nothing really happens. They kind of just walk around. Some of them die, but not in ways we really get to read because we’re following the narrator. The psychologist does give some information, but honestly, very little. The biologist just collects a bunch of incomplete information that doesn’t help her do anything. She looks at some stuff, can’t make sense of it, and then possibly dies. You also spend a lot of time just listening to the biologist just go on about her life before. Which I think would be fine in a longer book, but it took too much time away from the present story. Very uneventful, but the world the author creates is cool.
