Publisher Description
On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, 13-year-old Briony Tallis sees her older sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching Cecilia is their housekeeper's son Robbie Turner, a childhood friend who, along with Briony's sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge.
By the end of the day the lives of all three will have been changed forever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had not dared to approach and will have become victims of the younger girl's scheming imagination. And Briony will have committed a dreadful crime, the guilt for which will color her entire life.
Atonement is at its center a profound, and profoundly moving, exploration of shame and forgiveness, and the difficulty in absolution.
Customer Reviews
Love.
This is one of my all time favorite books. Beautifully written. The movie is really good too!
Skips whole paragraphs
If you’re someone who wants to hear the WHOLE book or is reading along to the physical book, entire paragraphs and phrases are completely cut out from this audio, such a waste of money
Don’t fall for the reviews.
I could not get into this book. But I kept trying, certain I must be missing something because the reviews were so good. However, I finally concluded that this is actually the worst book I’ve ever read. The flow is odd, and there are so many details that go nowhere making them pointless and leaving you wondering why? I was left with a sense that the author was simply trying to hard. I wish I had my time and money back. Shame on anyone that compares this book to Jane Eyre. Shame shame shame
