I loved Bad Bishop by L. J. Shen. Someone recommended this author to me and suggested this book. The tension, the angst, and the chemistry between the characters kept me hooked from beginning to end. I also found myself chuckling quite a few times listening to Tiernan’s internal monologue, his banter with Lila, her brothers, and his sister. And the sister’s banter with Lila’s brother Achilles. I can’t wait to hear their story.
What truly elevated this experience for me, though, was the audiobook narration. The dual narration was phenomenal. I especially appreciated that the male narrator voiced the male characters’ dialogue and the female narrator voiced the female characters’ dialogue. It made everything feel so much more authentic and immersive.
There’s nothing more distracting than when a narrator tries to imitate the opposite gender’s voice. It can pull you out of the story and make emotional scenes feel unintentionally unserious. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. The seamless back-and-forth between the narrators made the characters feel real and fully embodied. Their performances added depth, nuance, and genuine emotion to every scene.
If you’re considering the audiobook version of Bad Bishop, I highly recommend it. The story is powerful on its own, but the narration truly brings it to life.
