"As a firm believer, I began having doubts. Doubts about faith, and doubts about believers not asking questions. I embarked on a journey to get closer to God. Perhaps I became too close. What I saw changed my life forever."

A Journey Worth Taking!
I just finished this on audio and it was an absolute adventure! The entire book is a wonderful journey as you get to see what it is like for someone to go on quest to find out if just believing in something is enough. If you have ever questioned your faith and wanted to know what it would be like if you researched it for yourself, this is the book for you. This person devotes so much time to finding out what is right and wrong in his beliefs that it's a real treat to sit back and watch it all unfold. You may learn enough from this book to either inspire you to research your beliefs on your own or come to realize that Mr. Smalley has already done it for you. The "Coin in the Field" analogy of religion was so spot on, I don't think anything has ever struck me as well as that did. This book really hits home.
Finally!
I've read dozens of books on religion, philosophy and atheism. I usually have two big complaints: 1) The writers usually really come across as disrespectful jerks and 2) The writers usually make thing complicated in order to make up for the fact they are discussing this subject. What makes this book great is the common sense approach David takes. Anyone can read (or listen to, which I actually suggest) this book, and I mean anyone, and it would give them something to think about. David is just a very nice person. He's not angry, he's never disrespectful and he genuinely cares about people, which clearly drives his beliefs and his discussions. I am also fortunate enough to listen this podcast (Dogma Debate). If anyone asked me for a book about atheism this is the first book I would advise then to read (or listen to).
Typical Christian rating
The one bad rating here is an ignorant Christian just trolling the comment section of Books. David has extremely cogent and thoughtful arguments. Would you really expect a good rating from a Christian saying crap like “God have mercy on your soul”? Seriously?
