Publisher Description

Things are falling apart in the Richardson household. Angry arguments between Celine and her husband, Keith, have become routine. She resents that he's working long hours and staying out all night, and he accuses her of not giving him the attention he deserves. Their marriage is at a crossroads, and Celine worries how her 10-year-old daughter, Kassie, will be affected.

But the situation turns devastating when Celine is diagnosed with breast cancer. As her relationship with Keith deteriorates, Celine worries that she'll be left to navigate the difficult process of cancer treatment alone. But comfort and support come in the form of Celine's best friend, Lauren. They've been attached at the hip since they were children, and it is Lauren who's there for Celine in her darkest moments.

Now Celine will be forced to make tough decisions - about her marriage and otherwise - and for the first time in her life, she wants to give up. Lauren vows to help by any means necessary and makes the kind of sacrifice only a best friend can. But will it be too late?

AudioBook Review:
Stars: Overall: 3 Narration: 4 Story: 2.5

From the description, I was expecting a story full of a friend so much in your corner that she’d even help you hide the bodies. What I got was a bit more conflicted. Essentially this is the story of Celine – twelve years into her marriage and the words ‘rough patch’ don’t go nearly far enough. She and her husband Keith have hit that mark: one kid, careers, familiarity, perhaps even a bit of taking one another for granted – and things are going from tolerable to disturbing.

Adding health concerns into a relationship only magnifies the tensions, and Keith isn’t there for the long haul. Not only is Celine affected, but their daughter, Kassie, is just ten, and all the upheaval isn’t any place for a kid to be. Fortunately, there’s Celine’s best friend Lauren to help her through.

So – that’s the intention here in this story – in reality I found the characters a bit one-dimensional and flat, without any real importance to Lauren UNTIL the epilogue. You’d expect Keith to be the least favorite character in the story – but to be honest I thought they deserved one another, Celine was for the first better than half of the book very needy, whiny and not particularly nice. Kudos to the author for keeping me intrigued enough to power on through the end – for there, in the epilogue, is where the promise made early on finally comes to fruition.

Narration for this story is provided by Maria Howell, and her performance did help me to continue on with the story, her voice was pleasant to listen to, and she didn’t over-emphasize the frequent whinging moments from Celine, or try to over-reach in differentiating her voice to indicate the different characters. There was a flair that she brought to the book that I would have missed in reading it, and most probably would have put the book aside before the halfway mark. Overall, if you are a fan of this author’s work – this will most probably work for you.

I received an audiobook copy of the title from Hachette Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusion are my own responsibility.
