I received a free copy of Binding Vows by Catherine Bybee for an honest review. I have never read any time travel books, and was uncertain that this is a genre for me. So I can honestly tell you that I was completely skeptical about the book and the entire premise of it, before I even started it. The characters, and setting grab you from the first page. Catherine is an amazing storyteller and to my surprise I soon found myself engrossed in the book. I could not put it down. Binding Vows is the story of Tara McAllister, a twenty five year old nursing student, and Duncan MacCoinnich. Tara and Duncan first encounter each other at a Renaissance Faire, that Tara's friend, Cassy dragged her to. Upon checking in Tara and Cassy are confronted by Lady Gwen and soon are awarded luxurious accommodations, thanks to Tara. Duncan sets out to meet Tara and it is lust at first sight. Duncan tries to stay near Tara because he knows Lady Gwen's, who is really Grainna, true intentions for Tara. After the festivities of the faire have concluded, and Duncan is awarded the victor of the games, there is a handfasting ceremony for Tara and Duncan. Only Duncan, realizes with the vows that Lady Gwen has them recite are real, that they are married for all eternity. He warns Tara of Lady Gwen's intent and asks her to return to Scotland with him. She is uncertain at first and want Duncan to stay in Los Angeles. Duncan forewarns Tara of the danger that Lady Gwen poses, so Tara decides to join Duncan. Tara quickly says good by to Cassy and wonders how they will get to the airport. Instead, Duncan, his brother Finlay, and Tara, create a vortex with magic stones that returns them to 16th century Scotland. Unbeknownst to them Grainna, jumped into the vortex at the last minute with them and traveled back in time with them. Grainna schemes to seek revenge on the entire MacCoinnich clan. I love how the story unfolds with all the drama and Grainna's part in it all. I love the descriptions of the setting and 16th century life in Scotland. The characters are all enjoyable persons. Everyone in the MacCoinnich family has their own special power, including. Once again, Catherine delivers her brilliant plot twists as well as many heartwarming and poignant moments. I love the surprise ending. What started out as skepticism on my part ended up being a thoroughly enjoyable story. I am looking forward to reading Silent Vows and I can honestly say, that I wasn't sure that would be the case when I received the copy of Binding Vows. It was an outstanding story that shows that time and space offer no constraints to true love.
