Bitter Ends

This is an Apple Books audiobook narrated by a digital voice based on a human narrator.

In the shadowed corners of early 19th-century America, wealth and power often concealed corruption, cruelty, and forbidden desire. Bitter Ends unravels the haunting story of Richard Crowninshield, the infamous "Terror of Essex County," whose name was etched into Salem's history as the murderer of Captain Joseph White.

But before scandal and crime defined his legacy, Richard's life intersected with that of Mistress J—a young Southern debutante presented at Charleston's legendary Saint Cecilia Ball. Seventeen and radiant, she was described as "one of the most beautiful and accomplished women in the Southern States." Their bond, both intoxicating and dangerous, transcended mere affection, becoming a love that defied family, society, and the rigid codes of honor.

From the opulence of Charleston's ballrooms to the bustling docks of Salem Harbor, Bitter Ends traces their passion against a backdrop of shifting fortunes. Salem's rise as a maritime powerhouse gave way to decline after Captain White's murder shook the nation, while Charleston mirrored that arc, its Antebellum grandeur later scarred by fire and war.

At its heart, this is a gothic tale of doomed love, betrayal, and the destructive lure of power. Like the Deathwatch Beetle—the grim omen whose ticking foretells the end—Richard and Mistress J's romance becomes a vigil, a haunting reminder that love and ruin often share the same bed.
