Good book, grating narration.
The book is written by Dickens, and is, therefore, masterfully written.
The narrator’s voice is fine (pleasantly low and gravelly, even) for narrative portions of the text, but her interpretations of children, young women, and certain other characters’ voices are nothing short of grating. Fingernails being dragged slowly across a chalkboard have no power against the interpretation of Mr. Snagsby’s cough, for example.
If you enjoy ASMR, you may enjoy the vocalisations present in this audiobook. I listen to these books during work hours through earbuds, and consequently, I felt like I had an octogenarian following me around and trying to imitate a child’s voice directly in my ear canals, with all the pops, clicks, and gurglings that this picture implies.
If you can muscle your way through the sound, it’s an excellent story, well worth the “read”.
