Great book series. Why change narrator on the last book?
If you’re a fan of Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe historical novels and the glorious Patrick O’Brien Aubrey/Maturin naval novels or the Napoleonic era then McClellan’s “Powder Mage” series is for you. If you love the fantasy of Joe Abercrombie this series is for you. It’s clear he is influenced by these great writers and this history.
Set in a fantasy era much like earth’s Napoleonic era they are loads of flintlock fun. Filled with inventive fantasy unlike anything I have read.
My only ding in the rating is that the last book in the series the publisher changed narrators. The first trilogy and the first two in the new series were all narrated by Christian Rodska, a master of character and dialect. He breathed real life into these characters, making each distinct. The last book narrated by John Telfer is a disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, Telfer is a fine narrator and actor. But after establishing accents and characters to suddenly have an entirely different style for the last book is very jarring. Telfer simply doesn’t utilize accents and dialects as finely. And it’s like watching the LoR movies and the last film suddenly every single actor is replaced by new actors with radically different accents. I have no idea why the publisher would do this.
Change of narrator ruins the characters
The main villains voice done by the new narrator on the third book ruins the strength of the story. The villains voice sounds like he has food in his mouth and has a lisp. Really kills the mood.
