NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • J. R. Ward returns with an all-new tale of paranormal passion in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
The Black Dagger Brotherhood continues to train the best of the best to join them in the deadly battle against the Lessening Society. Among the new recruits, Axe proves to be a cunning and vicious fighter—and also a loner isolated because of personal tragedy. When an aristocratic female needs a bodyguard, Axe takes the job, though he’s unprepared for the animal attraction that flares between him and the one he is sworn to protect.
For Elise, who lost her first cousin to a grisly murder, Axe’s dangerous appeal is enticing—and possibly a distraction from her grief. But as they delve deeper into her cousin’s death, and their physical connection grows into so much more, Axe fears that the secrets he keeps and his tortured conscience will tear them apart.
Rhage, the Brother with the biggest heart, knows all about self-punishing, and he wants to help Axe reach his full potential. But when an unexpected arrival threatens Rhage and Mary’s new family, he finds himself back in the trenches again, fighting against a destiny that will destroy all he holds most dear.
As Axe’s past becomes known, and fate seems to be turning against Rhage, both males must reach deep—and pray that love, rather than anger, will be their lantern in the darkness.

A fresh breath of life to the BDB
Blood Vow is what The Beast should have been, I think it’s because the Brothers had their stories and now it’s time to move on to the new blood. With the Black Dagger Legacy, Ward is giving us a new set of fighters yet we still get to see and catch up on our old favorites, this one was a continuation of The Beast, with Rhage and Mary. I enjoyed Blood Vow so much more than I did The Beast, for the reason I felt the story with Bitty should have been told as a secondary story, which it was in Blood Vow. The main story in this book revolves around Axe, a recruit, commoner and male with a lot of baggage.
From the beginning of the series, Axe was the one I was most looking forward to reading about, his story did not disappoint. Axe is loaded down with guilt and self-loathing and finds his escape in his addiction, his sex addiction. Like all Male Vampires in just takes that right female to make their world come together.
Elise is an aristocrat who wants so much more for herself than to sit at home and knit, attend parties and make babies. She wants to get an education and help her fellow vampires. Her father discovers she has been sneaking off attending college and has a meltdown. But a solution presents itself, as a bodyguard in the form of Axe.
Axe and Elise’s chemistry is off the charts and you can feel the sparks fly from the first look. But they come from two different worlds and she is essentially off limits to him. Will they risk it all to be together? Will he change his ways? Will she give up everything for him?
I loved Blood Vow, not only the Story of Axe and Elise but the story with Mary, Rhage, and Bitty. I loved the ending the little family finally received, it brought my heart so much joy. But I keep wondering about Lassiter, is Bitty going to be his love interest when obviously, she is older and transitions? Makes me wonder?
Blood Vow is a fresh breath of life into the Black Dagger Brotherhood world and I am looking forward to continuing the series far into the future.
