Publisher Description

Stephen Sheerin was born to play on Broadway - or at least, under it. He's a musician, a conductor, and his dream is to music-direct a big Broadway musical. After years of toiling in the pit of some of the best-loved (and loathed) hits on the Great White Way, he's just been given his big break. Can life really be going that well?

Of course not - his family is driving him crazy, and his boyfriend can't seem to get rid of his other boyfriend. Add to that an alcoholic diva, the cheapest producing team on Broadway, and a comatose casting director, and you have some of the other characters buzzing around Stephen's Broadway break. Then there's Stephen himself - neurotic and bitchy - who realizes that maybe total happiness is overrated.

Narrated by Seth Rudetsky, from Sirus radio and Broadway's The Ritz; Kristin Chenoweth, Tony Award winner, star of Wicked and TV's Pushing Daisies; James Wesley from the Rosie O'Donnell cruise ship; Jonathan Groff, Tony Nominee from Broadway's Spring Awakening; Andrea Martin, Tony Award winner, from SCTV, and currently in Young Frankenstein; Jeff Bowen, Hunter Bell, and Susan Blackwell from [title of show]; Andrea Burns, from Broadway's Tony nominated In the Heights; Andy Karl, from Broadway's Legally Blonde and the upcoming 9 to 5; Anika Larsen, from off Broadway's Zanna, Don't and Broadway's Xanadu; Mary Birdsong (from TV's RENO 911); Billy Porter, from Broadway's Grease and winner of Star Search!; Richard Kind, from TV's Spin City and Broadway's The Producers. Jim Price, from Les Miserables and Off-Broadway's Bat Boy; Ann Harada from Avenue Q and the upcoming 9 to 5; Emily Skinner Tony nominee from Broadway's Side Show; Juli Wesley - Becky's First Grade Class at PS 98; and Sally Rudetsky (Seth's Mom).

Seth is my hero!

Seth is one of the reasons that i fell in love with Broadway. I started listening to him on Sirius 77 (the station devoted to Broadway) and now I listen to him constantly. He is witty and bright (and an extremely talented pianist!) and it is evident from his writing. I read this book when it first came out and now I am so excited to listen to the audio version. He has recruited great talent as a supporting cast and they sound like they will fit the characters perfectly. Seth, you are ahmazing!

If there was ever a book that needed to be heard rather than read, I’ve found it. I’ve never enjoyed an audiobook more than this; in fact, I justified long driving trips just so I could listen to it. Rudetsky’s story, loosely autobiographical, is a very funny trip through the process of one piano player’s rise to success and insight during his first conducting job on a Broadway musical. Paralleling the stories and gossip of the trials and tribulations of creating a professional musical is his own story of ongoing counselling and self-revelations. Both paths are equally explored with a great sense of humor and endearing self-mockery.

Rudetsky is by turns (and self-admittedly) infurating, ingratiating, hysterical, flamboyant and adorable. He never lets himself off the hook for any of his junior high school frustrations, and by the time the book ends, his growth feels as personally rewarding to us as it is to him. He turns the listener into his confidant, and I find myself frustrated that he isn’t my new best friend.

A number of theatre luminaries provide the voices of the supporting players in his life, giving each a chance to plump up the humor with their comic timing and playfulness. For those of us who never made it, it’s wonderful to go on the journey with someone who does.

It just isn’t right that there isn’t a sequel available. Sequel now!

OMG this is Great!

This is such an amazing and funny book. I struggled for a millisecond with giving it a 5-star rating, because how do you put a current, quirky, funny book in the same star category as a great old piece of literature? You know how? You do it by ranking the reaction it gave you. I laughed...I felt connected...I learned about some behinds-the-scenes stuff that made me laugh so hard my stomach hurt. I have recommended this to both my Broadway friends and to my own therapist (you have to read/hear the book to find out why). Some audiobooks are annoying to listen to, but the casting of popular Broadway stars as the characters made this so much more than an audiobook. It was like listening to a show, and just having to imagine the sets and costumes. If you are a Broadway fan and want a great story, with some hidden behind-the-scenes gems, PLEASE get this!
