That, as he saw it now, was his life’s work: trying to make right what he’d gotten wrong. Wasn’t that a fair measure of a person, what they did with their mistakes?
In the jubilant aftermath of the Allied victory in Europe, Cal Jenkins, a man wounded not in war but by his inability to serve in it, shares a single, life-altering moment with Margaret Salt, a woman determined to outrun her past. Cal is married to Becky, whose spiritual gifts help the living speak to the dead, while Margaret’s husband, Felix, is serving at sea, believed to be safe—until a telegram suggests otherwise.
What begins as a fleeting transgression becomes a complex secret that irrevocably binds all four of them in unexpected ways. As their small Ohio town remakes itself in the postwar boom, the Salt and Jenkins families remain in each other’s orbit, and the consequences of choices made long ago begin to emerge, reshaping their lives in ways that will forever impact the next generation.
Sweeping yet intimate, resplendent with moments of deep emotion and unforgettable characters, Buckeye is a transportive story of love, loyalty, sacrifice, and forgiveness.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Two families live in the shadows of betrayals that bind them together in this big, powerful story set in the American Midwest. Cal Jenkins was kept out of World War II by a bad leg, and after marrying the first woman he fell for, his love was tested when she began exploring her paranormal abilities. Margaret Salt loved a handsome man whose secret life compounded his PTSD after returning home from the navy. For a while, Cal and Margaret found comfort in each other’s arms, and their brief affair spawned lasting consequences. Buckeye is a masterful exercise in large-scale storytelling, as Patrick Ryan weaves a vast cast of characters and events into an epic novel that’s dramatic, thoughtful, witty, and brisk. Michael Crouch’s narration is exceptional, with his regular-guy voice matching the novel’s plainspoken Midwestern settings while adding a wealth of drama, nuance, and character shading in a performance as memorable as the source material. Buckeye is a story about love and loyalty that’s honest and relatable.

Enjoyed
It’s a child of the 60s and 70s was enjoyable.
Stunning work
Beautifully written, masterful storytelling.
The most tedious over-wrought family saga imaginable
I could not make it past Chapter 5 of this pretentious mess. The plot took the “snowflake template” popular with some modern novelists to extremes - winding prose, characters’ inner thoughts for hundreds of words. Considering the ensuing plot (no spoilers here, I promise) it’s obvious the writer and his agents focused-grouped the thing to smithereens. Googled the ending and moved on with my life.
