APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
We were bewitched by this historical fiction tale of desire, obsession, and dark magical realism. V. E. Schwab follows three characters across three timelines. Beautiful Maria burns with ambition in 16th-century Spain. Gentle Charlotte struggles to decide her fate in Regency England. And Alice bears the weight of her past pain in modern Boston. Three skilled narrators harness the hypnotic beauty of Schwab’s writing to make these women feel intimately real as they each tangle with similar questions—questions about lesbian desire, toxic obsession, and the haunting possibility…of becoming a vampire. And yet, this is far from a plotty supernatural thriller. This listening experience is all about richly real characters, a sensuous gothic atmosphere, and a gorgeous, palpable sense of yearning. And even as Schwab draws smartly on vampire classics from Anne Rice to Carmilla, the voice here is unmistakably her own. If you loved the moody brilliance of her other books like Vicious or The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, this is a must-listen.
Customer Reviews
Great for horny teenage vampire lovers
Could not finish listening to this, it was not at all what the reviews led me to believe this book would be. I was hoping for something similar to Addie LaRue but I should have known to expect more nasty blood stuff from Schwab. Do not recommend the audiobook either, the main narrator’s tone is so cringy it makes hate the character even more than is probably intended. Very disappointed because I bought the audiobook excited about the 3 female characters and narrators but the story’s content was way off base for me. Nothing wrong with it if that’s what you’re actually looking for, but I was not, so I hate this.
