Publisher Description
Callum Derringer was hired by the Pittsburgh Titans to help rebuild the organization after a devastating plane crash left its future unknown. Now that he’s got the team back on track, it’s time to put some effort into his own life.
When I accepted the job of general manager with the Titans, it was just the opportunity I needed to prove myself to the sports world. Unfortunately, my career isn’t the only area in which I’ve previously made mistakes and the past is about to come back in a big way.
Juniper Ryan is…complicated. Smart, funny and insanely gorgeous, she was my first love and my first heartbreak. But my loss was my stepbrother’s gain and she’s been his wife for five years now. I’ve done a decent job of putting her out of my mind but when I’m brought home for a family emergency and see the bruises on Juniper, I’m gutted to learn that she was pushed into the arms of a monster.
Vowing to put our past aside, I learn dark truths about my brother and his marriage to my first love. And to make matters worse, I’m beginning to realize the feelings I once had for Juniper aren’t tucked quite as far away as I had hoped.
When things take a dangerous turn, I’m willing to put myself in the line of fire to keep my girl safe. I was a fool to walk away from Juniper the first time and I’m a man who knows better than to make the same mistake twice.

Protective
Sweet, protective Callum. This is a second chance romance and I think the second time around is sweeter for them. I love the Titans crew. Juniper fits right in.
Second Chances
I was curious about Callum, but never expected his story to be so complicated. He and Juniper (Junie) were high school and college sweethearts. He is two years older than her, so when he graduated from college his career required traveling, A LOT of traveling. He made the unilateral decision that it was no life for Junie so he left her at home. And we all know how it goes when a unilateral decision is made, on either side. Junie waited and waited. In the meantime, she became friends with Callum's step brother, who was and still is jealous of Callum, what he is and what he has. So he started encouraging Junie to give Callum an ultimatum. And, again, we all know ultimatums go.
It's now 15 years later. Junie is in a loveless and abusive marriage to Joshua, the step brother. Callum is finally in a position that would allow for a family life, but Junie is taken. Until he gets the call that his mom has fallen and is in surgery. Brienne gives him her plane to fly home to be with his mother. While home, the truth starts coming out about Junie's marriage. To the point that Callum makes arrangements for her father so she has no excuses not to leave the abuse. When his mother tells him to get her out of town and as far away from Joshua as possible, he takes her seriously and does it. But neither one of them never anticipated the lengths Joshua would go to.
This story has triggers. Spousal abuse, violence, animal mutilation, sibling rivalry to the extreme. Please be aware if these will affect you.
Jason Clarke is dreamy as Callum, psychotic as Joshua and businesslike, don't mess with me as Preston. Lessa Lamb portrayed Junie's vulnerability, hurt, anger, love and acceptance like it's another day at the office. It was so easy to fall in love with these characters based on the story and the narration. It's art brought to life.
What a series!
Wow! Ms. Bennett is really going deep into the emotions for this one! This story could be triggering for some so proceed with caution.
Callum's first love Juniper abruptly comes back into his life when he goes home to see his mom after she had a bad fall. The one who got away, but it's so much worse than that since she married his step-brother. When he sees what Juniper's life is like he can't let her stay for another minute.
The chemistry between these two is hot and there is a lot of anger to get through, but they do and what they find is a love that was never extinguished.
This story had me moaning at times. You knew what was coming and yet it was a great story. I loved watching Callum fight for Juniper in a quiet way until she was ready to move on with him. She was so strong and such a fierce character. This story was so well written. I loved watching Callum get his second chance.
The narrators had me fully engaged in this story. It was very well told.
