Publisher Description

A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov’s Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together.

Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions. But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer.

The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start. Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner: R. Daneel Olivaw.  Worst of all was that the “R” stood for robot—and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!

Great Audio Book to Get You Started on Foundation

“Caves of Steel” is, according to Asimov, the second book to read in the Foundation Series following, “The Complete Robot”. If you’re ‘reading’ Foundation using audiobooks, “Caves of Steel” is the fist to which you have access. And it’s a great start!

Yes, it’s written using the language of the early 50’s America, which can be a bit tough to get through, especially when Elijah is talking to his wife, Jessie. And the intellectual bias of the day–it was fashionable then to believe that people would become mere cogs in a statist system–is almost humorous to hear. Still, Asimov is a great writer and it shows here. In this 1954 work, the pace is just right, the narrative devoid of wasted puffery and conversation, and the concluding chapters pull you in so much that you shouldn’t operate heavy machinery while listening.

I really hope someday that this book is made into a movie, because it would krazy-glue viewers to their screens. And they’d want more. And this is only the beginning of a great series.
