“Epic, romantic, and enthralling from start to finish.”—Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series
“An all-consuming work of literary fantasy that is breathtaking both for its beauty and its suspense.""—BookPage, starred review
A captivating and romantic debut epic fantasy inspired by the legend of the Chinese moon goddess, Chang’e, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.
Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.
Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.
To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic, of loss and sacrifice—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

Addicting!
I've listened to many many audio books, and the narrator in this one is no worse than any I've listened to. She did a great job differentiating different characters and acting the parts.
The story itself was addicting: great concept, story-telling and dialogue, and I really felt drawn to the relationships between the characters because they developed so organically.
I think writing complex characters may be a bit of a weakness for the author, to be honest, though. Very light potential spoilers coming next:
I love the main character being a strong woman with motivations outside of a man, but she was written with little to no flaws. Everyone loved her when they met her, and if they didn't, they must be villianous. She was humble, and any little mistake she made, she immediately recognized it and apologized, and everyone forgave her; if they didn't, they would eventually because basically she always did everything she could to the best of her ability and could be faulted for nothing.
That'd be great for a real person, but most real people aren't like that, and it's much more interesting to read about flawed, complex characters.
It's also much harder to write flawed, complex characters on top of all the other things that make writing difficult, and the writer did a really wonderful job keeping me coming back throughout the whole book, but one-dimensional characters is something like a pet-peeve for me, hence my 4-star review. Sorry, Sue Lynn Tan!! I'll definitely be buying the next book in the series; if not for that one complaint it would've been 5 stars!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book
I felt like a little kid sitting in a forest listening to a fairy tell the most magical story about a warrior goddess. I highly recommend this book!
Incredible
I appreciate the care that the author took in writing this story. Such detail, and impeccably paced. There was no rush in getting the story out…no errors that i detected in my first listen. Typos or (misspeaking) can really drag a story down.
I think the narrator was phenomenal as well. Long time listener of audio books and this one is hands down my favorite BY FAR.
