A New York Times Bestseller

One of The New York Times Top Ten Books of the Year

A Washington Post Notable Novel

One of TIME Magazine's Ten Best Novels of the Year

From the author of the National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird and the bestselling modern classic The Color of Water, comes one of the most celebrated novels of the year.

In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project’s drug dealer at point-blank range.

The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride’s funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird. In Deacon King Kong, McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood’s Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself.

As the story deepens, it becomes clear that the lives of the characters—caught in the tumultuous swirl of 1960s New York—overlap in unexpected ways. When the truth does emerge, McBride shows us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion.

Bringing to these pages both his masterly storytelling skills and his abiding faith in humanity, James McBride has written a novel every bit as involving as The Good Lord Bird and as emotionally honest as The Color of Water. Told with insight and wit, Deacon King Kong demonstrates that love and faith live in all of us.

Pretty good

Love his wild storytelling technique. Colorful funny characters. Loved the parade of ants referrals — made me laugh out loud. Love all the wildly alive people alcohol and sex and dancing. So honest and alive. Some sections desperately need editing especially those with governor and Irish mobsters. The actors portraying Irish people are absolutely embarrassing how bad they are. I can’t believe these parts weren’t cut. The author writes credibly about black life and jews snd so on but writing about the mob is way way way out of his range. His next book — chicken hill — has much tighter editing.

Deacon King Kong

One of the finest audiobooks that I have ever enjoyed. Listening to the narrator Dominic Hoffman is like sitting down, drink in hand, before a superb raconteur as he spins out one long captivating story. James McBride has a gift for vivid, unforgettable characters and spot -on dialog. A great story, well told.

This book was amazing. I wouldn’t recommend physically reading it, but the audio book was worth it for sure!!!! It had the twists and turns the evolution of characters. The redemption and peace that each character needed in their own way. It spoke true to Neighbors being messy, which we love to see cause I’m a nosey neighbor! Lol. HOWEVER, it really redeemed the idea of community taking care of each other and of the power and protection of the church. I looooooved that most of all cause nobody judged him for being a drunk. He was still an amazing man, husband, and friend to the community. He helped where he could and was valuable. I loved their spirit of celebration. They loved celebrating in that book and sharing with one another. I loved the idea of generations that this book showed and the ways in which the covenants of the old where still keeping the generations of now. A beautiful sentiment. This book gets 5 stars from me hands down because it revived my faith in the community and bridging the gap amongst people through trust, love, and faith in people being able to grow and get better.
