APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A dark passion underlies the Southern-fried mystery of Sarah Pinborough’s thriller. Marcie and Jason’s lavish wedding was the talk of Savannah society, even though their relationship began as a steamy affair. But now Marcie’s paranoid that Jason will step out on her like he did with his first wife—especially when the drop-dead gorgeous Keisha enters their social circle and Jason’s attention begins to drift. Darting between the two women’s dueling perspectives, this sultry psychological thriller blends unexpected themes like voodoo practices and class struggles to take the story in shocking directions we never saw coming. Pinborough makes great use of the sweltering Georgia setting to create an intense sense of history and atmosphere, and Saskia Maarleveld’s narration brings out the distinct personalities of the story’s two at-odds protagonists as they race toward a stunning finale that’s on par with Gone Girl and The Wife Between Us. It’s that good.
