Publisher Description
In a chilling blend of folk horror and twisting suspense, this modern masterpiece depicts isolation and dread within a small island community.
There's something in the water... On the edge of the Northern Atlantic lies a remote island. The islanders are an outwardly harmonious community—but all have their own secrets, some much darker than others. And when a strange disorder begins to infect them all, those secrets come to light. Ferry service fails and contact with the mainland is lost. Rumors begin to swirl as a temporary inconvenience grows into nightmarish ordeal. The fabric of the once tight-knit island is unnervingly torn apart—and whatever the cause, the question soon stops being how or why it happened, but who, if anyone, will survive.
Customer Reviews
A fair review
I love this author, A Boy and His Dog at The End of The World is in my top 10 books. So I will say I went into this book with higher hopes. I’m not sure it paid off for me.
The story takes a while to grow and develop, which isn’t a bad thing but sometimes it felt like it sagged. Some chapters functionally nothing important happens, but the book spends its time to develop the characters and create legitimate bonds between them. If you like slice of life stories, slowly unfolding plot points and quirky characters you’ll enjoy the inhabitants of this island.
I wanted to give this book higher ratings and I could for sure see other people loving this, but it wasn’t for me.
The main characters development is very well done, some of the characters are very real and believable. The looming anxiety around the main threat is real and palpable sometimes… other times the book is more interested in what a seemingly random old lady is doing, or what the town as a whole thinks of X Y and Z.
I will say the ending is very solid and ties things together very well but in my case it wasn’t enough to secure this book for me.
In conclusion, the pacing is long, the people are odd, and the ending is good.
It’s a good book but a poor audio book
Chapters are cut off mid-sentence. Especially toward the end.
