Publisher Description

In this addition to a New York Times bestselling mystery series, Sergeant Hamish Macbeth—Scotland's most quick-witted but unambitious policeman—investigates the disappearance of a local woman who is more than she seems.

Kate Hibbert is all too eager to lend a hand to her neighbors. Although she has been a resident of the sleepy village of Lochdubh for only a year, in that time Kate has alienated one too many of its residents with her interfering—and not entirely well-intentioned—ways. When Kate’s neighbor sees her lugging a heavy suitcase to the bus stop, he hopes that the prying woman is gone for good. But two weeks later, Kate’s cousin arrives in town with the news that Kate has gone missing.

Hamish Macbeth is called in to investigate the disappearance, and soon he is befuddled by the discovery of Kate’s body, her suitcase . . . and the sneaking suspicion that Kate was someone much more sinister than she claimed.

Made me miss MC Beaton

Well written as usual, but the book was more violent than earlier Macbeth adventures and edges toward cliché: the gum-chewing sidekick, bad Russians, mysterious US super spy. Favorite side characters like Angus the seer were squeezed in almost like an afterthought. Priscilla is made to flirt (?!) with the younger sidekick, which doesn’t feel like her at all. I’ve loved the series but it has changed since Green took the helm, and not in a way that’s to my taste.

These books are getting worse!

I really wanted to like this one because I’ve love the Hamish Macbeth series, but the inclusion of random, irrelevant characters coupled with the return of the Russians made this book really boring. I didn’t care if the murder of the traitor was solved or for the return of old characters such as the “exes” who served no purpose. In other books they have aided Hamish in solving some of the murders, but their addition to this text was disappointing. Yes, I love his exes, but the characters seemed flawed. The return of Blair was unnecessarily painful and predictable. Also, the transition of the storytelling was extremely confusing, and I had to re-read those sections to make sense of the insertion of the story telling and remember what book I was reading. I’m heartbroken that these books are so awful now.
