Winner of the 2014 Audie Award for Fiction and Finalist for Solo Narration—Male
From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining—an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times)—also a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!
Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook—and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence—kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone—who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining—the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival...
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Stephen King audiobook veteran Will Patton is the perfect narrator for the horror icon’s extremely creepy follow-up to The Shining. Doctor Sleep catches up with Danny Torrance, now a recovering alcoholic coming to terms with the psychic damage he suffered as a boy. But Danny’s uneasy peace is disrupted when he’s drawn into the battle to protect 12-year-old Abra, whose unprecedented supernatural powers have attracted a sinister cabal that wants to exploit her. Patton’s delivery—both gritty and warm—shifts effortlessly between powerful emotion and stark horror. We get why Doctor Sleep won the 2014 Audie Award for fiction.

Incredible
This might be King’s best work!
Not great to read alongside
If you just listen to audiobooks, this is a fine experience. If you juggle audio and books, this is not the version for you. The book is broken up into Parts - Chapters - Subchapters. The audio tracks only mark the chapters which average to about ≈50 minutes. Scrubbing to find where you left off can be a nightmare. Wish I had realized this before I purchased.
Unlistenable
In general, I think I just did not like this story, it’s the first and only King story I’ve ever regretted buying.
The narration of the story is so grating that I found it awful to listen too. Patton making denture sucking noises and using the same voice for most of the characters is just awful. I don’t know if he “found” these characters to be more interesting if they all sound like they are in their mid seventies, but it’s awful. Even at the points where Abra is a toddler she sounds like an 80 year old woman.
If you liked the audio version of the shinning (which I found fantastic) beware, there is no audio continuity here. I’ve read that Dr Sleep is among Kings most polarizing works, and I can see why. Will Patton is also a very polarizing love him or hate him voice actor. It was too much for me.
