65-year-old widow Dolores Claiborne is giving her statement to the local police, and she has a lot to say. Accused of killing the wealthy old woman who’s employed her for decades, Dolores is adamant that she didn’t do it. Which is not to say that she’s never killed anyone. Actress Frances Sternhagen—who’s had roles in the screen versions of both Misery and The Mist—gives a powerhouse performance as Stephen King’s lonely but deceptively strong heroine. Sternhagen has fun with Dolores’ folksy Maine accent and the everyday poetry of King’s dialogue, and gut punches us with moments of poignancy and sadness. This is a brilliant audiobook rendition of one of the horror master’s most haunting, melancholy novels, and an essential listen for his legion of fans.

Underrated Masterpiece
Dolores Claiborne is an underrated masterpiece that deserves more recognition. The experience of reading the novel is significantly enriched by this audiobook, narrated by Frances Sternhagen. In fact, this audiobook stands out as one of the best I have ever listened to, adding a layer of realism to the story.
The novel centers on Dolores Claiborne, a sharp-tongued, resilient old woman who finds herself at the police station, accused of murdering her employer, Vera Donovan. What follows is an impressive 300-page monologue, delivered without any chapter breaks. This unconventional narrative style is a remarkable literary achievement, and while I wasn't initially prepared for it, I found it thoroughly enjoyable.
