Publisher Description

We're used to thinking about the self as an independent entity, something that we either have or are. In
The Ego Tunnel, philosopher Thomas Metzinger claims otherwise: No such thing as a self exists. The conscious self is the content of a model created by our brain - an internal image, but one we cannot experience as an image. Everything we experience is "a virtual self in a virtual reality".

But if the self is not "real," why and how did it evolve? How does the brain construct it? Do we still have souls, free will, personal autonomy, or moral accountability?

In a time when the science of cognition is becoming as controversial as evolution, The Ego Tunnel provides a stunningly original take on the mystery of the mind.

Excellent work

An excellent work and, as others have pointed out, like any good work of philosophy of mind it is anti-spiritual, because contemporary neuroscience and natural selection have rendered the probability that there is a “soul” or “collective consciousness” exactly zero percent. If you’re looking for mysticism and magic, certainly, look elsewhere.

Ground breaking in some areas but a bit anti-spiritual as much of Susan Blackmore's work.

Good stuff, interesting, fascinating but for me, in the end, somewhat depressing. To me, the author has the same kind of outlook much of Susan Blackmore’s work has which if you have hopes of a continued individual spiritual reality beyond a physical life will dash them. While the author won't go as far as to completely dismiss such possibilities as an individual soul (at least for some period of time) he's close enough to it to appear anti-spiritual, as I see true spirituality above and beyond religions. To better balance this work I'd like to see more reference regarding how consciousness interacts upon quantum physics measurements with all of its implications we live in a universe where consciousness appears to be more real than matter. Maybe we don't exist as a "self" beyond the "organism" as he states for our individual conscious reality as human beings or any life for that matter, but I do believe we are all a part of a larger whole or a conscious collective which at its center is self-aware of all its parts as well as the thing people call God (I don't like to use that word because it's too loaded with religious implications). This is a worthwhile read (audio book) but go into it understanding this individuals path through life has dashed his hope of a continued "after-life" existence of consciousness for sentient beings but also has some very good perspectives. Although in a few places I found some of his statements regarding his theories to be just a little on the egotistical side such an attitude (although only hinted at here and there) may very well be warranted as much of his work does appear to be ground breaking. Maybe a few of his new ideas are just another piece of the puzzle and may lack in some areas but they sure look like some very solid pieces which are worth understanding. Each piece in the study of consciousness adds more to the total picture, more resolution and clarity, good work but watch out for the sharp edges concerning spirituality.
