Publisher Description
This young adult steampunk series debut set in the same world as the New York Times bestselling Parasol Protectorate is filled with all the saucy adventure and droll humor Gail Carriger's legions of fans have come to adore.
Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners--and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.
But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine's, young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage--in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.

Don't let the preview turn you away!
I got this audiobook because I am a huge fan of the parasol protectorate series by Gail Carriger, and I have to say that I was worried for the first chapter. I didn't immediately love the narrator and the story, but please don't let stop you from enjoying this book. The narrator Moira Quirk does a good job vocalizing the different characters and, especially once Sophronia leaves home, the book is very fast paced and engaging. This book is for young adults and it does a good job of staying with that audience, no racy content, but it also doesn't really come across as a kids book at all. You can tell that the heroine Sophronia is a little young from her naïvety but she comes across as intelligent and competent, and Ms. Carriger does a wonderful job of not writing down to YA audience. All in all, I enjoyed this audiobook and I am sad thinking how long I am going to have to wait for the next one!
So good!
I highly recommend this series. The books are fun and engaging and the narrator does an excellent job of sucking you in. I don’t normally read YA, but I adored everything about the Finishing School series. (Except for maybe the love triangle aspect, but that wasn’t as painful as others I’ve read and didn’t dominate the plot, so it’s all good.)
I decided to read through all of Gail Carriger’s books after randomly picking the San Andres Shifters off the bookshelf at a store. I love it and as soon as I realized it was part of a more expansive universe, I had to read it all. Despite loving the premise, the characters, the voice, and the world build, I had trouble getting into this story on my e-reader. Thank goodness I thought to try in a different medium before giving up because I LOVED it. I’ve since made it through the six books in the universe and I can’t recommend it enough.
This is a great story for teens as well as adults!
Very we'll written. The story kept me interested the entire time. I cannot wait to listen to the next book.
