Some one-night stands are forgettable. Others send cops to your door. The long-awaited third installment in Michael Connelly’s Jack McEvoy series finds the former newspaper reporter quietly working for a consumer affairs website. But one day the police come calling, looking into the murder of Tina Portrero, a woman Jack had a fling with a year earlier. Mystified by Tina’s savage death, McEvoy returns to his old bloodhound-on-the-trail ways, creating a podcast about the case. Primary narrator Peter Giles uses a gravelly voice for Connelly’s down-on-his-luck writer turned podcaster, while second narrator Zach Villa’s ultrasmooth, quietly intense delivery makes the killer sound far more in control than the hero. This two-man setup boosts the tension as their showdown speeds toward its suspenseful conclusion. As the host of Murder Book, Connelly has real experience with podcasting. That gives this thriller a lived-in, timely feel—even though it’s been 11 years since the last book in this series. Bravo to Michael Connelly for finding the perfect way to bring a great character out of retirement!

Good book
Intriguing, fast pace & smart. Good stuff!
Another Great Connelly Book
Connelly’s third Jack McEvoy book picks up several years after “The Scarecrow.” Once again, the protagonist gets involved in a case via his investigative journalism efforts and that case ends up bringing in former FBI agent Rachel Walling (Jack’s love interest).
Once again, technological change (this time DNA sequencing) plays a role in the story, and it adds some nice flavor to both the case and the series. Connelly keeps the pace rolling nicely as the story unfolds. He also teases the possibility that McEvoy and the love of his life might return for another book. If so, I’ll be there.
If you enjoyed the first two books in the series, you should enjoy this one as well.
