Unrealistic portrayal of PTSD
First, I must say the narrator does an excellent job. Secondly, I turn my attention to the story told.
The author begins this book with a realistic and harrowing event experienced by the chief protagonist.
It is an event with long odds of survival, and nearly 100% chance of leaving a survivor with severe PTSD. Yet, the physical, emotional, and mental repercussions for the survivor of such an event almost immediately fade into the background as the author turns to exploring a romantic relationship between the survivor, and a woman who loses two people during the catastrophic event - a friend, and a fiancé. From the moment of their meeting, it is the grief of the woman who lost two people that becomes the central dynamic with the greatest influence on the trajectory of the relationship. The nearly certain PTSD and survivor’s guilt become whispers. Thus, I found the story told far less complex and interesting than it could have been.
