Far from the Madding Crowd is Thomas Hardy's fourth novel and his first major literary success.

Published in 1874, it tells the tale of Gabriel Oak, one of three suitors for the hand of the beautiful and spirited Bathsheba Everdene. He must compete with the dashing young soldier Sergeant Troy and the respectable, middle-aged Farmer Boldwood. And while their fates depend upon the choice Bathsheba makes, she discovers the terrible consequences of an inconstant heart.

Thomas Hardy (1840 - 1928) was an English novelist and poet of the naturalist movement.

Wonderful value for a superior narration

Well read edition of Far from the Madding crowd with rich, believable West Country accents. The audio was very slightly fuzzy as though it was an old recording. You can hear it in the preview.

Far from the Madding Crowd was the book that restored my belief in Thomas Hardy as a great writer. I never enjoyed Jude the Obscure or Tess of the d’Urbervilles at school and it was a relief to find a Hardy novel, which had a happy ending and characters less annoyingly self-destructive than Tess and Jude.

An excellent buy

This classic by Thomas Hardy is beautifully read and although the recording may be older, it is an excellent value. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Excellent story, excellent narrator

The narrator does a superb job developing the characters with variations on accents. Very well read. The recording does sound older, but I found the quality quite good and listened to the story on my iphone and car audio system during commutes. I highly recommend this audiobook if you are a fan of English literature. The price, at $.95, is absurdly low for the quality of both the story and the narration.
