Fifty Grand

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Jack Brennan is the welterweight champion of the world and he is finished. He is thirty-three, he cannot sleep, he misses his wife and his girls, and he knows that the young challenger Jimmy Walcott will take the title from him. Everyone around him knows it too.

So Jack puts fifty thousand dollars on himself to lose, and he tells his trainer about it as if it were nothing more than good business. On the night of the fight, in a ring at the Garden, the arrangement goes very badly wrong, and what Jack Brennan does in those last rounds is the hardest and most honest thing he has left.

First published in Men Without Women in 1927, Fifty Grand is one of Ernest Hemingway's great boxing stories: spare, brutal and deeply moving, a tale of fixed fights, grace under pressure and a man's last stand.
