REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK | #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“This fast-paced read has everything you could want in a thriller: secret identities, a mysterious boss and a cat & mouse game that kept me guessing the whole way through.” —Reese Witherspoon
Evie Porter has everything a nice Southern girl could want: a doting boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence, a tight group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.
The identity comes first: Evie Porter. Once she’s given a name and location by her mysterious boss, Mr. Smith, she learns everything there is to know about the town and the people in it. Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job.
Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job isn't like the others. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes—especially after what happened last time.
Evie Porter must stay one step ahead of her past while making sure there's still a future in front of her. The stakes couldn't be higher—but then, Evie has always liked a challenge. . . .
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A woman who deals in false identities discovers what it’s like when the tables are turned in this fun and unpredictable thriller. Cute, hardworking Evie Porter met handsome and wealthy Ryan Sumner one fateful day when he helped her change a flat tire. But Ryan doesn’t know who Evie works for: An underground syndicate running blackmail schemes on rich people with something to hide—like Ryan’s illegal business that fences high-value stolen goods. But there’s something Evie doesn’t know either: Ryan has connections to her boss. Already a titan of YA fiction, Ashley Elston makes her grown-up literary debut with this cutthroat game of cat and mouse. Evie and her many alter egos make her feel like a hundred heroines in one, and narrator Saskia Maarleveld’s voice captures every one of them. If you love a puzzle—especially one that’s hard to crack—don’t pass on First Lie Wins.
Customer Reviews
4/5 - a good read
Enjoyed the novel with all its twists and turns. The author did a great job at telling the story, and the narrator is good. The ending did seem a little rushed because throughout the last 45 minutes it left me thinking, “wait.. how did we get here?”. Overall, good read!
Loved it
Fun, twisty read.
Well Done!!
This is another instant classic. The story reminds me of what Agatha Christie would have written had she been raised in the South. Narration is also first class.
