Publisher Description
Now abridged for young people, Flags of Our Fathers is the unforgettable chronicle of perhaps the most famous moment in American military history: the raising of the U. S. flag at Iwo Jima. Here is the true story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and indomitable will of America.
In February 1945, American Marines plunged into the surf at Iwo Jima–and into history. The son of one of the flag raisers has written a powerful account of six very different men who came together in the heroic battle for the Pacific’s most crucial island.

Flags of Our Fathers
This was my first audiobook, at least with the ipod.
I was a bit surprised by the way I got swept-up in the story. I was expecting a lot of emphasis on the battle. And yes, the battle story was described in reasonable detail. But the surprise for me was how fascinating it was to delve into the family history and background of each of the flag-raisers.
I'm going to give it the top rating because it hooked me (by surprise). I had planned to listen to it during my weekly airplane rides, but, I couldn't wait for the next week and had to finish it at home.
Hope the next one is as captivating.
Makes Saving private Ryan look mellow! God press our WWII Vets
Starts out with the lives of the normal boy growing up in American before the war and takes you through the worse battle in US history. Then take you back to the three surviving men after the war and how they feel about being "Heros" in Our Nations eyes. If you are into WWII history this story seems to be based of facts and is a must READ or Listen. Not a download for young children to listen to. It is not graphic but does not hold any punches either. This author also wrote the Fly Boy's which does not appear to be a down load on this site but is also a must read if you like this.
Please take the time to thank our vets for all they do.
