Publisher Description
Following Atticus is the remarkable true story of a man and a dog embarking on the challenge of a lifetime. This is author Tom Ryan’s inspiring tale of how he and his miniature schnauzer companion, the “Little Buddha” Atticus M. Finch, attempted to scale all forty-eight of New Hampshire’s four thousand foot White Mountains twice in the dead of winter. It is a story of love, loss, and the resilience of the human and animal spirit that’s as thrilling as Into Thin Air and featuring the most endearing and unforgettable canine protagonist since Marley and Me.

Wonderful in So Many Ways
First I bought the book, second I bought the audio on iTunes. Yes, it is a story of a man hiking with a little, loyal dog in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, but it is so much more than that. It is a love story, adventure story, tale of decisions and change. I'm an avid hiker who has trekked to all of the peaks mentioned in this book but my eyes, and ears, and heart and imagination were opened further than I would have guessed as I traced their steps through the stories. The storms they overcame were snow, ice, sleet, wind, and rain, but also place and time and health issues. The author is generous in his fund raising efforts, but also in his decriptions of the people he has met during his life. A book you can hold in your hands is a wonderful thing. The audio is, too, and they compliment each other. What's more, the author has a Boston accent!
Do I recommend this? Absolutely. It's for family, friends, dog lovers, New Englanders, hikers everywhere, students, writers, those with political interests, small town and city dwellers. Be an armchair traveler with this book or let it help you discover your own journey.
Unexpected Delight
Honestly, I bought this audiobook because it was inexpensive and about hiking and a dog. I figured I wouldn't lose much if it turned out to be not so good. What a surprise I received! The insight Tom Ryan shared with his readers was a journey of deep emotion, light humor, joy, and grief all wrapped up in two furry bundles, Max and Atticus. I adore this book and hope many others get the pleasure of sharing Tom's journey with his family, his dogs, and himself. Thanks for sharing your life with us and allowing Atticus into our hearts.
