Four Past Midnight
This audio book is made up of four short stories by Stephen King. And each story with read by a different reader. All four readers did an excellent job. The first two stories were made into movies or minor success. The first story was very enjoyable but my favorites were the third and four stories.
One past midnight is called “The Langoliers” and is a very good time travel story. William Dafoe who’s voice you lose yourself in and only after stopping and then restarting does his face jump to your vision as you first hear his voice.
Two Past Midnight is called “Secret Window Secret Garden and was made into a movie with Johnny Depp and John Turturro. If you have seen the movie, when you hear James Woods southern draw accent all you can see is John Turturro as the Character “Shooter”. I don’t want to give anything away.
Three past midnight is called “The Secret Policeman and was excellently read by Ken Howard. Listeners be warned that this story has some disturbing violence towards children which I have read that some question why Mr. King has to include in some of his stories. My thoughts where that it first serves a purpose as to why characters act and react particular ways and second indicated the true brutal nature of real evil in our world. But finally to reflect our world in a real way, not sugar coated. Such violence happens every day somewhere and society should not close a blind eye to it. We can not address or solve issues if we don’t face them dead on for what they are. Mr. King holds us spellbound and steadfast to acknowledge real evil if only in the security if our comfortable safe place. The same as he did in Doctor Sleep, The Institute and Outsider to name a few.
Four Past Midnight is called “The Sun Dog” and tells the supernatural tale of what happens when a 15 year old boy gets a Polaroid Camera as a Birthday gift. It turns out that no matter what anyone points the camera at and takes a photo, the photo is not of the subject but of the same photo time after time, or is it the same. What evil lurks behind these photos and how can it be stopped?
If this is the first time listening or reading Four Past Midnight, stories three and Four will both be fresh to you and well worth the cost and time to consume. And I mean consume, it grabs you and makes you want to go until the end! And if you haven’t seen the movies based on the first two stories in some time, you will find yourself eager for the next word....
