Publisher Description

In 2035, the southwestern United States is ravaged by drought, reeling from an environmental catastrophe that has left the landscape a chaotic, depleted ruin. California, still viably inhabitable due to its oppressive social controls, marshals state-of-the-art surveillance technology and totalitarian policies to preserve its fragile hold on rapidly dwindling resources and an increasingly unsettled population.

After a prominent California congresswoman is assassinated for her support of the state's secession from the United States, Nathan Fisher - accidental witness to a clandestine military-style operation - is drawn into an unraveling conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of power and threatens the lives of Fisher and his family.

Hunted by ruthless killers seeking to ensure his silence, suspected by the authorities, and aided only by a loyal Marine officer with a mysterious agenda, Fisher and his loved ones must somehow stay a step ahead of their relentless pursuers, navigating a ruined world in a desperate search for sanctuary.

Our Possible Future?

I give this book a rating of 4.5 stars. Fractured State is the first book in the Fractured State series. I've read other books by this author and was looking forward to reading this book and he did not disappoint me. I found it amazing and complex and the thrills and action keep on coming. Like with his other books, I got caught up in the story and had a hard time putting the book down. This story is violent and not for sensitive readers.

The book is set approximately 20 years in the future. California and the Southwest has been suffering for those years through the worst drought in history. "Thanks" to the effects of the CA Resources Protection Act, unintended or not, the regulation and enforcement have made California a quasi-Big Brother state for residents.

California is seriously talking about seceding from the United States. There are two main factions in the fight for California - the group One Nation Coalition and the group California Liberation Movement (CLM). One Nation Coalition is backed by some powerful people and corporations who will do whatever it takes to keep California from leaving the U.S.A.

The main character of the book is Nathan Fisher. Nathan is a water-reclamation engineer employed with the San Diego County Water Authority. Early one morning, while headed to the beach near the Del Mar desalination center to top off the family's water supply while could, he witnesses two stealth boats retrieving a covert dive team. He knew he should have listened to his instinct and stayed home. When events start to spiral out of control, he knows life will never be the same for he and his family.

This book does not necessarily have a cliffhanger ending, but is open ended for the series to continue from where the author stopped this story. I look forward to reading future books in the series.
