Hear singer/songwriter Nellie McKay and critic-at-large John Powers, on this edition of Fresh Air.

Nellie McKay joins us for a concert and conversation. Her new album is called Obligatory Villagers. It's got jazz and cabaret influences, with sassy lyrics that cover the areas of feminism and zombies. McKay has also worked as an actress and stand-up comedian. Her debut CD was called Get Away From Me, a play on the Norah Jones album title Come Away With Me.

Then, John Powers tells us why he loves the TV show Project Runway, now in its fourth season on the Bravo cable network. [Broadcast Date: November 21, 2007]

An Interesting Interview with Entertaining Performances

This audiobook is a must-have for any true blue Nellie McKay fan. The live performances are priceless, especially "Broadway Melody," sung in McKay's seldom-heard tight, willowy vibrato. "Zombie," the final song in the broadcast, provides a glimpse of the manic, pseudo-schizophrenic improvisation that often occurs at McKay's live shows. Best of all, a live performance of “P.S. I Love You” is included, so fans and completists need not download the otherwise mediocre movie soundtrack to hear her interpretation of this old standard.
The discussion with host, Terry Gross, also allows rare insight into this often misunderstood songstress. McKay is clever, humble (often overly so), and her intentions never quite align with our expectations. We see can see this in the discussion of Nellie's song, "I Want to Get Married," which, contrary to popular interpretations, was written as a sincere lamentation rather than a blistering satire. McKay explains her songwriting motivations saying, “You can criticize something you strive for.” Whether she is lamenting, criticizing, or reinterpreting, Nellie McKay stands as one of the most unique and compelling voices of her generation. Though traces of her earlier rap influences are unfortunately absent, this broadcast provides new insight into an intriguing artist.
