A very well-mannered horror story.
This is one of the most sedate chillers I’ve ever read, it reminds me of late 19th or early 20th century horror stories. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just something a potential reader might like to know. The spooky thrills tend to be on the mild side and generously separated by lots of incidental dialog and detailed set dressing. Like many old-fashioned ghost stories, it often seems as if the book is more about the rarified lives of its privileged characters than supernatural thrills.
The book is well-written and atmospheric, it creates a strong sense of a place and the lives of its characters. It’s a book for grown-ups who want a little thrill of the creepy - but not too much.
The audiobook production is very good and I thought the narrator did a great job with it.
I was looking for something with a little more scary oomph than “Ghost Story” delivers, so I was a bit impatient with its leisurely pace and was left feeling unsatisfied in the end. But I think it just depends on what kind of spooky story you’re looking for and if you like yours in the grand old literary tradition, you’ll probably enjoy this more than I did.
