Stunning
Matt Bomer does a specTACular job as the narrator of James Baldwin’s powerful book, switching adeptly from French, to Italian, to American English accents without missing a beat. The story is as topical today as it was when written in the 1950s. But there’s one major flaw: Since “Giovanni’s Room” is kinda short, this new edition includes a “Forward” by Kevin Young. WHO? For 28 minutes at the beginning of this recording, he rattles off one Spoiler after another! He eventually makes it a bit of a biography, but this ain’t no Forward. If you want to experience this novel in the way that the author intended, SKIP THE FIRST 28 MINUTES. I wish I did.
