Gregory the Great was pope from 590 to 604. Under Gregory's guidance began the conversion of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes who had been conquering Britain piecemeal since the middle of the fifth century. Because of his writings, Gregory ranks with Ambrose, Augustine, and Jerome as one of the four great Latin doctors of the Western Church.
