In her sequel to 2009’s The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin shifts the focus of her step-by-step approach from finding more joy in general to finding more joy at home. Using her own life with her husband and two daughters as a test case, she lays out a school year’s worth of monthly resolutions stretching from September to May—and it’s easy enough for the rest of us to follow along with the plan. Listening as Rubin guides us through her advice, we were impressed by the sheer variety of suggestions she makes to help us feel more comfortable and engaged with what’s around us. We loved the ways she encourages us expand our definition of “home,” from exploring our neighborhoods like a tourist to becoming more engaged in our communities. (Her idea of standing in front of your local post office and giving strangers free stamps on tax day is both silly and brilliant!) Rubin’s narration is super down-to-earth and her enthusiasm is undeniably genuine. Happier at Home is packed with all the inspiration you need to start feeling a whole lot more in sync with your surroundings.
